Rules of the Flag

The American Flag

Over the years, a flag code has evolved that involves an elaborate ritual of activities and strict traditions. These include:

1.  During the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance, one should face the flag, with right hand placed over the heart.

2.   The flag should be displayed only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagpoles. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. It should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed on or near the main administration of every public institution.
