Sons of Revolutionary Sires (SRS)
March 21, 2009
The San Francisco Chapter hosted the Thomas Jefferson Chapter for their
18th Annual Joint Meeting at Sinbad’s Restaurant at Pier 2, San Francisco
on March 21, 2009. There were over 30 members and guests representing the
San Francisco, Thomas Jefferson, Silicon Valley, Redwood Empire and Sacramento
chapters. Sacramento Chapter member Jim Faulkinbury was the luncheon speaker
at the joint meeting. He spoke about Dr. James Lafayette Cogswell and his role
in establishing the Sons of Revolutionary Sires (SRS) on October 22, 1875 —
the 1st lineage society (other than the hereditary Society of Cincinnati formed
in 1783) to recognize the patriots of the American Revolution. The SRS became
the CASSAR in April 1890 as part of the newly formed NSSAR.
Following the luncheon, the party adjourned to the Olivet Memorial Park in Colma
and dedicated the bronze plaque placed on Dr. Cogswell’s monument there. At the
Board of Managers Meeting in Burlingame last November, a wreath was laid at the
monument but the plaque wasn’t yet available. This ceremony formally dedicated
the plaque.
The SAR officials attending the dedication L-R are:
Thor Wiles, President of the Silicon Valley Chapter;
Marston Watson, San Francisco Chapter;
Don Gurley, President Thomas Jefferson Chapter;
Grant Noah (with bugle), President Redwood Empire Chapter;
Mark Rose, President San Francisco Chapter;
Jim Faulkinbury, Past President, Sacramento Chapter;
and Steve Renouf, CASSAR President
